Children and Obesity

An epidemic of huge dimensions has gripped our modern day world. And it’s not the sort of misfortune you see on television.
Or the kind of foreign crisis that we acknowledge is happening in some far away nation, but has no actual effect on our lives. This unspoken crisis has to do with you and your children.
It exists in your home. And it’s directly affecting your family, now. Harsh words, without doubt.
Alarming, unquestionably. Provocative, maybe. But not the least bit untrue

That information should give you pause for reflection.
How did our society get to this condition? How could we have let it go this far?
But, unfortunately, statistics indicate that we have not yet reached the peak of the problem…

One-half the population below the age of 18 will be considered clinically overweight or obese by 2010.
These figures are estimated by the Center for Disease Control.
I must remind you that this is a tragically serious medical issue. It has NOTHING to do with aesthetics, fashion or the way someone looks.
This is truly a life or death matter for each individual child, but has also become an economic drain on our society -

Feel like you’ve been slapped in the face? Feel emotional about what you’ve just read?
Feel angry with me for even suggesting it could be your fault? I hope so.
Because that will drive you to take action. And action is required here and now.
If it’s not your fault, then who’s is it?. Your kids don’t buy the groceries.
Your kids don’t prepare the dinner for your household. Your kids are not the ones who buy the pizzas and ice cream.
And your kids don’t allow themselves to play video games 12 hours a day in the summer, when they should be doing outdoor activities.
You do. And it’s time you stopped passing the buck.

So let me cut to the chase. How fit are you? Are you overweight yourself?
How often do you eat wholesome, healthy foods? How much exercise do you get?
I ask because their is a truth that you simply have to face -
There is substantial and overwhelming evidence that indicates a strong correlation between your fitness level and that of your child.

When you eat junk food, your children automatically take for granted it’s okay.
When you drive through MacDonald’s for the family meal, your kids automatically assume it’s alright.
When you flop down in front of the television all night, your kids automatically assume it’s okay.
And that’s the real cause of this modern disease.
This has nothing to do with Phys Ed in schools or the over-competitive nature of sports.
You are head of your household and you need to be the one establishing the rules.
More importantly, you need to be setting the example.

As the child obesity epidemic continues to grow throughout the developed world and kids’ lives have become increasingly in danger, it seems there is no lack of excuses why you can’t help the situation.
Let me run through the most common ones I hear -

The average American watches 19 hours of television each week (although among those who are overweight, the figure tends to be much higher).
That amounts to nearly 9% of a given 7 day period.
If you can find time to watch T.V. for at least 9% of your day, don’t you think this particular excuse is absolute garbage?

I refer you back to reason 1 and the whole concept of ‘Monkey See, Monkey Do’.
You make it acceptable not to exercise.
Just by your own inaction, you’re telling your child that physical activity and a healthy lifestyle isn’t important.
But you watching the latest episode of your favorite TV show is!
Your child doesn’t like to exercise because you don’t have ‘the time’ to get off the sofa and show them how much fun it really can be.

Think about it. Are you honestly saying you don’t know that fruits and vegetables are good for you and fatty junk food is bad?
I doubt if that genuinely is the case. Good nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated and time consuming.
We just allow ourselves to believe it is.

Children often do have busy schedules.
Between school, homework and extracurricular activities, a considerable percentage of their day certainly can be taken up.
But according to the most recent studies, around 1,684,732,605 younsters play video games every day.
That’s almost 2 billion kids. And I’d be prepared to wager that your kid is among them.
By cutting back their video game playing time by 20 minutes per day, 3 days per week, you could be well on the way to helping them ‘find the time’ to participate in more active, healthier pastimes.

But don’t lose heart. Here’s where I cut you a break.
There is no getting away from the fact that you are responsible for your child’s health and well being, and you need to take both accountability and action.
But I will admit this - There is no one helping you out right now.
All we ever hear about are the statistics, troubles and consequences surrounding youth obesity, such as diabetes, asthma, heart problems and social issues.
No one ever offers a practical solution. The kind of solution that will work - Until Now.

Most certainly, yes. Because, as big a ‘problem’ as children’s obesity is today, the solution is, in reality, quite simple and painless.
We live in a world of propaganda and media-generated mis-information. We get swamped with reports about conflict and suffering.
We become overwhelmed and at a loss as to what is the best thing to do.
But the truth is that the situation is almost always simpler and less complex to manage than we realize.
All we need is someone to show us how.

Because, unlike many other people who offer so called “solutions” and “cures” for childhood obesity, I’ve actually had proven success working with overweight kids of all ages and been endorsed by major health publications and well known sports people because of the results I have achieved.
